HRD Antwerp Is Bringing Back Its Jewelry Design Competition

The Belgian organization is calling for entries from all over the world, with an eye on attracting emerging talent.

Antwerp—HRD Antwerp is bringing back its jewelry design competition for the first time since 2017, with the winners slated to be announced at the Vicenzaoro show in January 2023.

The theme for the 18th edition of the HRD Design Awards is “peace.”

There are three categories, the traditional categories of diamond jewelry and gemstone jewelry (rings, bracelets, necklaces and earrings) and a new category, accessories, which includes shoes, handbags and watches.

The winner in each category will see the piece of jewelry or the accessory they sketch produced. They will also a member of the HRD community, with all benefits included.

Designers can enter through the HRD Design Awards website.

The deadline for entries is Oct. 15 and HRD Antwerp is slated to announce the winners at a red-carpet event on Jan. 23, 2023.

HRD Antwerp is holding the competition in partnership with CIBJO, The World Jewellery Confederation, and the Vicenzaoro show. The January 2023 edition of the show is scheduled for Jan. 20-24.

CEO Ellen Joncheere said: “2022 is a year of disruption; who can make more sense of this than our young and creative talents. Let them see how they give a face to hope and a more sustainable future,” she said.

HRD Antwerp said it is looking for “new and creative talent worldwide,” particularly from the United States, Africa and Europe. It is asking design schools, creative platforms, governments, and artists to encourage young designers in particular to participate.

For the last edition of the contest in 2017, HRD Antwerp said it received entries from more than 800 designers in 38 countries.

Its goal for the 2023 competition is 2,500 entries.

HRD Antwerp first held its jewelry design contest in 1984, then called the Antwerp Diamond High Council Awards. The goal then was to promote design excellence in contemporary diamond jewelry in Belgium.

In 1988, HRD Antwerp made the contest biennial and gave the designers a theme.

In 2003, it opened up the contest to designers worldwide.
