Gemstone Spotlight: Mociun
It was a happy accident. Trying to figure out what to do with a parcel of gemstones led Caitlin Mociun to create her signature, one-of-a-kind gemstone cluster pieces.
These earrings feature two blue Montana sapphires weighing 0.84 carats and 0.76 carats, 0.39 total carats of peach-pink marquise sapphires, and 0.08 total carats of diamonds set in 14-karat yellow gold ($4,300).
The pieces often use antique diamonds and rare stones, such as bicolor sapphires, with minimal metalwork to let them shine.
“It’s all about the simplicity of composition and form for me,” Mociun said.
The unique look of her eponymous brand speaks to today’s millennial consumer looking for something different, especially bridal clients. Mociun also said that her brand has been moving more upscale recently, as she works with higher quality stones and craftsmanship to help set it apart.
When looking toward the future, the designer said she will focus on expanding the wholesale side of her business and also would like eventually to open a store on the West Coast, in addition to her location in Brooklyn, N.Y.

These earrings feature two blue Montana sapphires weighing 0.84 carats and 0.76 carats, 0.39 total carats of peach-pink marquise sapphires, and 0.08 total carats of diamonds set in 14-karat yellow gold ($4,300).
This custom ring features a 1.35-carat pink-orange sapphire surrounded by a number of smaller sapphires, and a 0.03-carat ruby as well as 15 pave-set rubies. Price available upon request.
A 14-karat yellow gold ring featuring a 1.40-carat pear-cut bicolor sapphire flanked by smaller bicolor sapphires, blue sapphires, and yellow and white diamonds; price available upon request.
This 14-karat yellow gold ring boasts 11 Sri Lankan sapphires weighing 0.56 total carats and 2 Montana peach sapphires weighing 0.08 carats each ($4,500).
These 14-karat yellow gold earrings feature a 1.10-carat emerald-cut unheated Montana sapphire in one and a 1.12-carat emerald-cut unheated Montana sapphire in the other, 0.47 carats of old mine-cut white diamonds, two pear-cut peach sapphires weighing 0.15 carats and 0.16-carats, and six pave-set blue Montana sapphires ($8,200).
A 14-karat yellow gold ring boasting a 1.30-carat oval-cut peach bicolor sapphire and a 0.23-carat pear-cut peach sapphire, surrounded by smaller white, black and champagne-colored diamonds; price available upon request.
This ring features a 0.72-carat oval peach-colored sapphire, a 1.03-carat cushion-cut peach-colored sapphire, a 0.54-carat trillion-cut blue-green sapphire and a 0.03-carat diamond, all in 14-karat yellow gold. Price available upon request.
This ring is set with a 1.32-carat pear-cut bicolor sapphire, a 0.31-carat white diamond baguette, a 0.03-carat champagne diamond and two emeralds weighing 0.09 carats each in 14-karat yellow gold ($5,000).
This one-of-a-kind, 14-karat yellow gold ring from Mociun boasts a 1.44-carat Sri Lankan yellow sapphire at center, accented with a 0.30-carat old European-cut diamond, a 0.10-carat ruby and a 0.05-carat blue sapphire. Price available upon request.
This pair of earrings in 14-karat yellow gold feature two old European cut diamonds weighing 0.27 carats and 0.33 carats each, two bicolor sapphires weighing a total of 0.27 carats, 0.14 carats of Montana sapphires and 0.05 carats of white diamonds. Price available upon request.
