GIA to Open Lab in Surat, India This Year
The institute also will expand its facility in Antwerp, Belgium in the second quarter.
Carlsbad, Calif.--The Gemological Institute of America is growing.
The institute announced Monday it is opening a new laboratory in Surat, India, this year, as well as expanding its facility in Antwerp, Belgium, in the second quarter to meet the needs of the global gem and jewelry industry.
The new lab in Surat will offer diamond manufacturers in the area local access to the GIA’s lab services, including melee analysis, which is a high-volume automated service that separates mined diamonds from lab-grown diamonds and simulants, and sorts the mined stones by color range.
In Antwerp, the GIA will expand its capacity for the M2M service, which matches rough diamonds to the resulting polished diamond. It also will provide diamond grading and secondary consultation services.
The institute will take in items for every service at both labs.
More information about opening dates will be released at a later date.
“Expanding our facility in Antwerp and opening a new location in Surat continues GIA’s mission-driven effort to bring our research-based laboratory services for diamonds, colored stones and pearls ever closer to our clients,” said GIA Executive Vice President and Chief Laboratory and Research Officer Tom Moses.
“Providing innovative, timely, independent and highest-quality gem identification and grading services to our global clients ultimately serves the interests of and protects the gem and jewelry-buying public.”
