From Australia to Zambia, GIA’s Field Gemology team has left no rock unturned in their quest to build the most extensive research collection of gemstones from around the world. With a trip to Tanzania and Kenya last year, GIA carried out the one-hundredth Field Gemology expedition since the department’s founding in 2008. In 100 expeditions, over 29,000 verified samples have been collected, comprising over one million carats of gems from 20 countries. This collection is the cornerstone of GIA’s colored stone research and lab services and underpins the rigorous scientific protocols in GIA’s colored stone Identification Laboratory. In this presentation, Dr. Aaron Palke, Sr. Manager of Colored Stone Research at GIA will lead a discussion of some of the more fascinating field expeditions and highlight the research that the Field Gemology collection supports.
