Christie’s Names New Global Head of Luxury
The auction house has appointed Emmanuel Danan as its new global managing director of Christie’s Luxury.
Christie’s has named Emmanuel Danan the new global managing director of Christie’s Luxury.
New York—Christie’s has a new leader for its luxury business.
The auction house has named Emmanuel Danan its new global managing director of Christie’s Luxury, succeeding Aline Sylla-Walbaum.
Danan will oversee Christie’s luxury business, including live and online auctions as well as private sales.
He will be based in Paris but work alongside specialist departments in New York, London, Geneva, and Hong Kong.
Prior to joining Christie’s, Danan was president of Europe and the Middle East at Maesa, a Bain Capital Private Equity portfolio company.
Danan has more than 22 years of business experience, including 17 years at L’Oréal, where he was the general manager of L’Oréal Paris for Western Europe. He also held several general management positions in Taipei, Taiwan; Düsseldorf, Germany; and Shanghai.
Before working at L’Oréal, he was a consultant at management consulting company Kearney.
Originally from Paris, Danan holds a master’s degree in business from EM Lyon and a master’s degree in organization sociology from Sciences Po Paris.
Danan will report to Francis Belin, president of Christie’s Asia Pacific, who oversees the Luxury, Asian, and World Art departments globally.
“Emmanuel joins us at an exciting moment for Christie’s, following our record year and growth across the luxury departments, both at auction and in our bespoke private sales business in 2022,” said Belin.
“His experience working across diverse markets internationally will provide an excellent framework to continue to move this part of our business forward.”
Christie’s reported a nearly billion-dollar year in global sales of jewels, watches, wine, and handbags in 2022.
“Luxury purchases are the major point of entry for new clients to Christie’s, and continue to drive the online sales platform, contributing more than half of all lots offered online,” said the auction house.
Jewels highlights for 2022 include the sale of the largest white diamond (228.31-carats) ever offered at auction that sold for $21.7 million and the “Fortune Pink,” the largest pear-shaped, fancy vivid pink diamond ever to be sold at auction for $28.8 million.
