Detroit Jeweler Fatally Shot, One Suspect Charged
Daniel Hutchinson, 47, was in his car when multiple shots were fired at him on June 1.
Oak Park, Mich.—Detroit area jeweler Daniel Hutchinson, 47, was fatally shot on June 1.
According to local reports, officers who responded found that Hutchinson had been shot several times while inside his GMC Denali.
Fox 2 Detroit reported that a suspect pulled up next to him in front of a local pawn shop and fired more than a dozen rounds at the GMC.
Officers performed CPR at the scene. Hutchinson was taken to the hospital, where he later died.
His wife was also in the car at the time of the shooting but was not hurt, according to the local news site.
The Detroit News reported Roy Larry, 44, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and felony possession of a firearm on Friday. He has entered a not guilty plea.
Local news stations are reporting that police believe it was not a random shooting and that Larry knew Hutchinson, though his motive is unclear at this time.
Hutchinson had his own jewelry store called Hutch’s Jewelry, which was not far from the scene of the shooting.
The jeweler was known for creating flashy custom pendants, blinged-out watches, and chains heavy with diamonds, and had several local celebrity and artist clients. He was also known for being the place to get the Cartier sunglasses known as “Buffs.”
Hutch’s Jewelry has more than 300,000 followers on Instagram.
“Detroit and Hutch are like synonymous with each other. Out-of-towners get Buffs specifically from Hutch because of the rappers who made it famous in their music. It’s going to be a huge loss to the hip-hop community, too,” Felando Merriweather, CEO of the Hip-Hop Lab a customer of Hutchinson’s, is quoted as telling local news channel Fox 2.
A vigil was held for the jeweler Saturday in Oak Park.
