Pippa Small Announces ‘Venus’ Collection
Inspired by the Roman goddess of love, the designer looked to the sea for her new collection.
Venus’ birth story was depicted in the renowned “Birth of Venus” painting by Sandro Botticelli, where she stands in a scallop shell just after being born from sea foam.
Small, owner and designer of the eponymous brand, saw the beauty that the goddess of love emanated in the myth and transferred it into her collection through the use of abalone shells and 18-karat yellow gold.
“Since Venus was born in a scallop shell rising from the foam of the ocean’s waves, she seemed a fitting muse for this collection—particularly as she was the embodiment of beauty and grace, just like this collection,” said Small.
“The abalone shells evoke the soft hues of a sunset over the ocean, with gentle tones of pink, blue, and green that shift and shimmer with the changing light as the waves crash.”
There are 14 pieces in the collection, ranging from $650 to $7,080.
The shells, sourced from the Pacific ocean, are a byproduct of abalone meat harvesters and gathered under responsible conditions, said the company.
They are then handcrafted into jewelry by local artisans in Jaipur, India.
Pippa Small Jewelry works with Fairtrade and Fairmined materials to help generate secure livelihoods in areas of conflict around the world, said the company.
Last year, Small was honored with the leadership in responsible practice award from the Initiatives in Art and Culture (IAC) conference, an award presented to a member of the jewelry industry who made a difference in ethical sourcing and responsible practices in the gem and jewelry trade.
Pippa Small’s “Venus” collection debuts on May 1.
It will be available on Pippa Small’s website, at Brentwood Country Mart stores in the U.S., and at Westbourne Grove stores in the U.K.
